Digital Challenges: Understanding the Impact of Online Engagement on Young Minds
A recent report by the WHO Regional Office for Europe, based on the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study, reveals a concerning surge in problematic social media and gaming use among adolescents. The study, involving nearly 280,000 young people across 44 countries, found that problematic social media use has increased from 7% in 2018 to 11% in 2022, with 12% of adolescents at risk of problematic gaming. These behaviors, characterized by addiction-like symptoms and negative consequences, are linked to lower mental and social well-being, increased substance use, and poor academic performance. While the report acknowledges the positive aspects of online connection, it highlights the urgent need for intervention to protect young people from the potential harms of excessive digital engagement.
Call for Action: Promoting Healthy Digital Habits in Young People
In response to these findings, the WHO is calling for a multi-faceted approach to promote healthy digital habits among adolescents. This includes investing in digital literacy education within schools, enhancing mental health services, promoting open dialogue about digital well-being, and training educators and health-care providers. The WHO also emphasizes the need for platform accountability, urging social media companies to enforce age restrictions and create responsible digital environments. The goal is to empower young people to navigate the digital landscape safely, balancing their online and offline worlds, and ultimately safeguarding their overall well-being.
